Purposeful

When was the last time you put together a photo album? Selecting photos, adding descriptors, arranging, and assembling are all a part of the process of telling the story of that time.

In John 20:30-31, John describes the purpose of his careful selection and placement of the stories in his Gospel. I was privileged a few weeks ago to share at church the purpose John describes and its implication for our lives.

Thankful

At the Meloch Thanksgiving table each person says something we are thankful for in the past year.

Over this year I have experienced incredible partnership from many – leadership mentoring, focused prayer commitments, extra gifts, words of encouragement, insightful questions, and so much more.

THANK YOU! Your partnership is incredibly enriching and encouraging. May God richly bless you this holiday season.

He Was Always With Me

“I sometimes prayed when I was little. . .but I could never find the answer to whether God was there or not. . . After I came here I was curious about American church, and I heard about the Fall conference for students. During the worship time I felt something and I was touched by God. At that time I was sure God existed, and noticed he was always with me, even when I was little. . . . When I go back to my home country, I want to help others who are interested in God just like my friends helped me.”

These were some of the powerful words shared by a new Christian international student at the University of Kansas to her friends and others.  As a result of her testimony, another student from her country is interested in studying the Bible, too.  Equipping international students to be world changers is the core of InterVarsity’s International Student ministry.  Please pray for Masami to find strong Christian community as she returns home this winter.

Pray with us

Pray for InterVarsity’s Native Ministries annual student conference—Would Jesus Eat Frybread? (WJEF)—being held at the end of this week in Anchorage, Alaska. Eleven students from Haskell Indian Nations University in our region are attending.

WJEF is for students who have come to faith and want to grow in their understanding of how to follow Jesus while honoring their traditions and Native heritage. This year, however, many students have invited friends who are interested in learning more about Jesus, but have yet to become followers.

Pray that the conference speakers will be sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s leading as they address in their talks both students of faith and those who are seekers.

Kansas Said Yes

“I’m here because God told me to be here this weekend..but I don’t want to be here,” shared Dan, a Johnson County Community College studentduring the first night of Fall Conference. Twenty-four hours later, a smiling Dan approached Area Director of InterVarsity in Kansas, Tim Lin, and said, “I figured out why God wanted me here! I’m here because I needed to re-establish my relationship with Jesus. And I’m now ready to do that!”

The Kansas area fall conference saw other students greatly impacted, too.  An international student began following Jesus for the first time. A Longview Community College student felt God’s love during the weekend and she was also ready to restart her relationship with Him. A student from Park University was so encouraged in his faith at the conference that when he was approached by two non-Christian friends for emotional support back on campus (not usually his strong-suit) he listened well, prayed for them and even led a mini-Bible study with one on the spot.

These are just a few of the hundreds of lives that were touched in big or small ways during fall conferences throughout the region this month.  Thank you so much for your prayers for many to say yes.

Lifting my eyes up

On a recent prayer hike I was reminded of how quickly I put my trust in things that take great effort though are inferior.

As I read Psalm 121 in reflection that day and lifted “my eyes up to the mountains” (vs 1) to remember where my help came from, I came upon this pile of stones. In this isolated spot, it was obvious that gathering this significant of a pile of large stones took some time. However when compared with the hill I stood on, the pile was tiny.

As I considered this image I was reminded of things that I tend to put my hope in: work, family, intelligence, etc. – things that build up with significant effort. The Psalm reminded me that our hope is in the “Lord the maker of Heaven and Earth” (vs 2) and that he is active in watching over us. That day, as I am called today, is to put my trust in Him.
