Encourage Service to God’s Purposes in the World

What a year!

When is the last time you stopped to map out the previous twelve months – notable times, places of sorrow, blessings, etc.? As I prepared my yearly report last week I started with a spiritual reflection of the previous year.

In this reflection I was amazed at all that happened in the last 12 months. Places of great joy, like the Special Olympics experience for my son; times of pain, like missteps I made with my colleagues; new partnerships formed, like with a close prayer partner; and deep ministry to students, like the Harvest Conference.

Praise God for his presence and guidance in these last twelve months. What a blessing to stop and reflect. What might you see if you charted out your last 12 months?

Let’s step back

It is pretty easy to keep moving forward without much reflection of where we’ve been or what to change on the way forward. My work of remembrance continues as I have two opportunities to stop and reflect this week.

The first is with our gifted regional leaders from Missouri, Iowa, Kansas, and Nebraska as we assess the last twelve months and identify adjustments and priorities for the coming year. The second is at my year end retreat where I will work on my year end report.

My prayer is that I will see clearly and hear the Lord’s direction.

What happened?

As our year comes to an end I am reminded of an important spiritual practices for us, and one often stated in scripture…remember.

As a supervisor I get the opportunity to do this work on my year end reviews for staff while reading all of the reports from the last 12 months. In looking back I see stories of God moving students to take risks, others choosing to follow Jesus, and times of heartache.

As I wrapped up my reading of one staff’s reports today, I was so grateful for the clear ways God moved in this year.

Is their a story of God’s provision that he is inviting you to remember today?

A New Season for InterVarsity

Tom Lin is InterVarsity’s next president, our first non-White President and also the first President to begin working with InterVarsity as a student.

I am so grateful for Tom and Nancy Lin‘s impact in my life, my family, InterVarsity’s Central Region (where he served from 2006-2010) and far beyond. It was a gift to be led by Tom as a regional staff and see how he consistently and humbly says yes to Jesus. Please join me in praying for this next step for Tom and Nancy and for our InterVarsity movement. To God be the Glory.

Here is a great article from InterVarsity’s website and an article from Christianity Today to read more.

Students in the lead

One of the compelling things at Catalyst is to hear testimonies of students starting new things on campus.

One student shared how they were led by their staff not to just be a role model on campus but to invite people to study about Jesus with them. After a couple of months of study with one friend, they said yes to Jesus.

Another recent grad shared about their work to start a LaFe (Latino focused) ministry and how God had orchestrated exactly what they needed for this to happen.

Pray that through these testimonies and other elements at Catalyst, students would be propelled into mission in new corners of our campuses and region.

It’s starting

Over the next 10 days 130+ students will come together to reflect on Jesus’ offer of full life and consider their response at Catalyst 2016.

Please pray for:

  • Safe travel for students and staff from Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska.
  • Students and staff to encounter the full life that Jesus offers.
  • Our chapters to be empowered to reach the corners of their campus and the campuses next door.
  • Wisdom and close connection to God as I direct this event.

Thanks!

Decision point

We have many choices of what to give time to. As I look at the life of Jesus he had a clear sense of what to do even at times if it puzzled those around him.

As a husband, father, and ministry leader I face many choices and I counsel others in their decisions. What have you found most effective for you in strengthening your decision making? Would you share it with me and pray for my continued growth in this area?

Our Heritage

At the Black Campus Ministry staff conference today we were challenged through the words of 2 Timothy 1:3-7 to remember. Remember the legacy that our families have given. Remember gifts given to us through the “laying on of hands” (vs. 6).

The gift that I instantly remembered was from a student leader at the University of Arkansas who upon first meeting me 19 years ago, laid hands on me and prayed for me to be humble. At the moment I was startled by this request and wondered why he would assume I was so prideful.

I’ve heard enough comments about my humility over these last several years that I see it as the gift imparted by this student. His gift to me enables the ministry that I do and I am so grateful.

What gift was given to you through someone else’s prayer? Take a moment to give thanks to God for them and as an extra step write them a note of appreciation for this gift.

Pray for Vision Conference

30 Students from the Central Region are joining 120 others in Chicago for Vision 2016. This conference has been an important place of renewal for our students and calling them to plant work among Black students on campuses in our region. Please pray that the 30 attending would come back with a vision for their campuses.

This conference is also the first step of the Empower program for 10 of the delegates. The program will have as its capstone the first ever Black student conference in our region in Spring of 2017. This conference will be planned and led by students under the direction of Tony Gatewood. Please pray that these students will catch a vision for what God wants to do in 2017 as they attend this weekend.
